Just about everyone loves Taco Tuesday, or tacos for that matter. However if you’re looking to go on a diet, tacos may not always be the best option if you’re counting calories and trying to control your daily food intake. At home however, making a few small adjustments could allow you to enjoy tacos without derailing your dieting efforts.
For starters, try swapping out the shell. Tortillas with whole wheat and plenty of fiber are great as an alternative to corn tortillas as these tortillas typically have a mere fifty calories, five grams of protein, and seven grams of fiber. You can also create your own “taco shell” by using some romaine lettuce to wrap your filling.
You don’t necessarily need to sacrifice on condiments to enjoy your taco with your favorite toppings. Opt for some fat free sour cream which has less calories and consider making your own salsa.
Instead of the ingredients that include lots of calories, pack your taco with mostly veggies, preferably non-starchy ones along with herbs. Mushrooms, red bell peppers, garlic, jalapeño peppers, these are all great options. You may also want to switch the ground meat and have fish tacos with something like mahi-mahi.
